As a Senior in high school I have seen and know the social structure of society today. There are many people who are poor and also those who are better off. When I read the quote "Henry David Thoreau believed that in order to live well, we must reduce the number of material goods we have. Otherwise, these things begin to dominate us." The first thing that I thought of was the Christmas Carol one of the newer movies from Robert Zemeckis.
In the movie, Scrooge is dominated by money all he lives for is making money. On the other hand, his employee Cratchit lives without all the riches of his boss and enjoys himself much more with his friends and family. (Spoiler Alert) In the end Scrooge gives away money to local charities and to Cratchit which makes everyone in the town happy and saves Cratchit's son, Tiny Tim. This shows how you do not need all the riches to live well and be happy even though you do not necesarily need to give up all of your goods.
